Stunning set from 1950s by Napier
January 19, 2023I have long said and written in my book, The Napier Co.: Defining 20th Century America Costume Jewelry that the term “costume jewelry” did not originate with Coco Chanel. My research pointed to its use in 1916 in newspaper articles. Herewith, is an ad from Otsby and Barton from Vogue in 1916. It gives a good explanation of the term’s origin, as well as the jewelry. Note with this ad, it appears noble metals were being used but some designs used rhinestones. What classifies as costume jewel (the materials) has evolved as we know it today, but the intent to enhance the costume, frock, or outfit has remained steadfast in my opinion. #thejewelrystylist #jewelryhistory #costumejewelry
